Animal shelters are an important part of Dutch society. These non-profit organizations are committed to the welfare of pets that no longer have a home for various reasons. This article explains what shelters are and how they work.

Getting an animal from a shelter

An average of 25.000 animals are taken into shelters every year. These animals are missing, have strayed, or are starving. There are also animals that have unfortunately been abandoned by their owners. This can be because they can no longer care for them or because they no longer want the animal. In either case, simply dumping the animal is the wrong solution. Yet, unfortunately, it happens regularly.
